What to plant now

According to Seattle Tilth's Maritime Northwest Garden Guide, here are some good things to plant in September:

Salad greens: small plants overwinter better than tall plants
Cabbage (for spring harvest)

If you're interested in starting things to over-winter (barely eek thorough the winter, but finish up in Februrary or so) you can start:

Mustard greens
Snow peas
Grains: Barley, Rye, Spelt, Wheat

You can also plant spring bulbs in late September/early October. This year I'm planning some tulips, crocus, and possibly some grape hyacinths.

Black Bean Burgers, Guacamole, and Spicy Yam Fries.. oh my!

Admittedly, this is kind of a cheater post, just because I am sharing the recipes from here: http://chefchloeblog.weebly.com/1/post/2010/08/burger-fries-combo-with-a-healthy-twist.html Chloe Coscarelli is a vegan chef of whom I am very jealous. She is makes the most delicious recipes, and was the first vegan chef to win the Cupcake Challenge on the Food Network. The day after the show aired, I thought to myself, "I wish I could find the recipe for chocolate/orange cupcakes... that sounded awesome." and there it was, in my inbox! Not only is she talented, she is also psychic! (ok, and she writes for Veg News sometimes, hence the recipe in their recipe club.) Turns out she also made up this avocado pesto recipe I was interested in! And then I found her blog, and I just had to try this veggie burger/fries combination. I've made it twice in two weeks... and totally worth it! (I just didn't make the mango sauce. Three meal componants was enough for me.)

Spicy Yam Fries:
(really are extra spicy, and I dipped them in the extra guacamole. What? Avocados are healthy!)

I got up today and decided.. my pantry needs to be organized again!! So I did this...

I moved things around, consolidated bags of stuff, and labeled shelves!! (of course my labelmaker ran out of tape, but I got most of it done.)

Curry in a Hurry (or slow, if you like it that way)

This is one of my favorite things to make. It's so easy! (aside from the chopping) And not to mention Delicious. (It was J's Birthday Dinner Request this year; that's how good it is, people!)The original recipe was for making in a slow cooker- which I will probably do once it is colder out. But for now, I can make it on the stovetop much more quickly.

Peanut Coconut Curry:

1 can coconut milk (this Thai Kitchen kind is awesome, because it's at least 1/2 coconut cream)

cooking spray
2 cups water+ veggie bouillion (or just use broth)
1/4- 1/3 c. peanut butter (I prefer chunky)
1 Tbsp. freshly grated ginger
2 Tbsp. soy sauce
1 lime's worth of juice
1 Tbsp. brown sugar
1 tsp. hot thai chile sauce (we call it "cock sauce", because of the rooster)
2 cloves garlic, minced

Veggies and such:
1 bunch broccoli, chopped (about 2 c.)
1/2 onion, chopped
1 c. baby carrots
1/2 a package of firm tofu, cubed
1 zucchini, diced
2 c. fresh spinach
3 green onions, diced

Cooked brown rice, about 1 c. per person

In a large stock pot, spray with cooking spray and add the onions and garlic. When they have slightly browned, add the vegetable broth and other vegetables (save the green onions and spinach). Add the ginger, coconut milk, and tofu. After about 20 minutes, when the vegetables have softened, add the peanut butter, remaining sauce ingredients, spinach, and green onions. Serve over rice, with crushed peanuts or hot chile flakes as you like.

Candy Mountain!

I just discovered the Candy Warehouse. So awesome!! They have all sorts of retro candy; some I'd even forgotten about like honeycombed peanuts or ribbon candy. Things are grouped into categories or manufacturers and OMG THEY EVEN HAVE PIRATE CANDY!! I'm having a sugar rush just reading about it....

Some things should not be veganized

Case in point? The chocolate chip cookie cupcakes I made last night. They were the most epic baking fail I can ever remember having. The cupcakes? Hard, and entirely stuck to the wrapper. Still tasty though, if you didn't mind eating the paper.

And the frosting? Chocolate soup. Very tasty, but even after adding 2 cups of powdered sugar, still soup. Usually when I make something with a few componants, even if one is off the other is good. These were very messy hockey pucks. Ah well... everything can't be golden all the time.

Food Challenge!

Cakespy wants to kill me. Seriously. Look at this and tell me if you don't want to make it instantly. Chocolate chip cookies PLUS a cupcake? How does it get any better?

My challenge: to pick up where cakespy left off and veganize it. Oh yes, it can be done! (and I will have it up in the next 48 hours.) In the words of Jean-Luc Picard... I will... make it so.

Waffles: It's what's for breakfast

I went blackberry picking at Magnuson Park yesterday with my friend Shelley, and got close to a gallon of blackberries! (this is a lesson for you, backyard! Start making more than 10 berries, and I won't have to leave home!)

Anyway, I wasn't entirely sure what I was going to do with them, so I decided to freeze some and cook with some today. The first step was rinsing them with water, and lots of it. I recently read an article about improving the longevity of berries by rinsing them with very hot water, so I decided to try it. After removing all the leaf bits and such, I covered the berries with near boiling water for about 30 seconds, and rinsed them off again.

This is supposed to really reduce molding of the berries, and keep them good for a longer amount of time. Then, I made one layer of them in a baking pan, and put them in the freezer.

This is the second batch that got covered and put into the fridge. This morning, I decided to make Blackberry Waffles!
Blackberry Waffles:
1 cup+ 2 Tbsp. flour
1 cup oatmeal
1 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
3 Tbsp. sugar (white or brown is ok)
1 1/2 c. soy milk
1/2 c. applesauce
3 Tbsp. vegetable oil
1 cup blackberries
In a mixing bowl, stir together the dry ingredients. Then add the applesauce, soy milk, and oil. Mix well. Let it sit for about 5 minutes for the oatmeal to blend with the rest of the batter. Add the blackberries last, and stir in.

Preheat your waffle iron. After it is ready, spray with cooking spray, and ladle in the waffle batter. Close waffle iron, and cook until it tells you it is done. Remove carefully! Serve with syrup and maybe even peanut butter!

J. and I were lucky enough last night to go to Foodportunity; it's a food blogger/writer/entrepreneur/small business owner/foodie fest, with lots of local businesses, caterers, chefs, and authors. There were about 15 or so different booths there, all with foods to taste, people to meet, and coupons for the having. There were also some local food celebrities there; restauranteurs, and chefs. It was very cool, and the people were ultra friendly!
We even met Keren Brown, the organizer. She puts together these kinds of events every few months, and honestly, I can't remember how exactly I found out about her. I think it has something to do with either the pioneer woman or cakespy. Anyway, these were some of my favorite peeps from last night:

Wheatless in Seattle is a gluten-free baking company that made the fluffiest breads, and the most delicious sundried tomato hummus ever. I'm totally going to try to copy it soon! They sell their products to PCC and a couple of other vendors, and have a location in Greenwood. After visiting their site, I want to go check it out just for some coffee!

This is an easy one. I was just talking yesterday about how excited I was to hear Jennifer Shea speak at the CCE conference in a few weeks.. and then I met her last night! At their booth, they had 3 kinds of mini-cupcakes to try, a caramel-waffle one (J's favorite), a chocolate- hazelnut one (delicious) and (my favorite) one that resembled a Hostess treat from my childhood, the tiger tail. (Coconut cake, raspberry frosting, dipped in more coconut, with raspberry stripes= Love!) After visiting their website and seeing their Pac-man cupcake display... I'm pretty sure we'll be going with Trophy Cupcakes for our wedding cupcakes. We might still have to do a few tastings, just to be sure though. :)

I met Katie a bit later, and her website seems very cool. It's got lots of advice for home chefs, health codes, nutrition, and green living.

Plus, the back of her card is very cool too.
We also had some delicious peach salsa from Metropolitan Market (and a free peaches coupon!), a tasty sweet potato crabcake, mystery Thai leaf-wrapped goodness from The City Catering Company, some great pie samples, an invite to a tasting on Thursday at Il Fornaio, and more desserts from Starlight Desserts (mmm... mini black forest cake!). All in all, it was a great night!

Conference of Creative Entrepreneurs

I am so excited!! I just bought my ticket for the CCE conference in a couple of weeks. (August 13-15, at the Century Ballroom) It looks like it will be the place to be for an awesome combination of business advice, craftiness, cool creative people, and inspiration in general. The whole idea is that it's a 3-day event, bringing together crafty individuals for seminars, hands-on workshops, and advice to get your creative business up and running. I've been kind of thinking about starting an etsy store to sell my crafty things for a while, and am also looking ahead to the future for the next phase of my business. I think this will be the perfect place to give me some new ideas and maybe kick me in the butt to get things going!

They've been putting the conference together for months now, and there are new speakers and guests added every week! I'm most excited to go to this and this, and to see Jenny Hart and Jennifer Shea!
